For ages, manufacturers have been working hard to slim down their devices. Gone are the days when you used to carry a 2 cm thick device with a tiny display. An average device these days is around 10 mm thick and apparently big manufacturers have stopped trying to reduce this any further. The reasons are obvious; they would have to compromise on things like high quality camera and battery life to further reduce the thickness of a device. But some manufacturers take this thing very seriously. We have seen various Chinese manufacturers come up with some of the slimmest devices this world has ever seen and this time, it is no exception.

Gionee is a Chinese brand which came into the Indian market a while back. They came in with some interesting devices in their line-up. The devices are well built and pack in some serious hardware. They recently showcased a new device called the Gionee Elife S5.5. They are claiming it to be 5.5 mm thick which means that it is the slimmest device on planet. All of a sudden Apple iPhone 5s and Google Nexus feel like fat pieces of metal (or glass in case of latter). He we are serving what we learned about the device yet.
Gionee Elife S5.5 Design
Gionee Elife S5.5 device measures 145.1 x 70.2 x 5.5 mm making it the slimmest device. The previous leader of this race was from another Chinese manufacturer and was 5.75 mm thick. The Huawei ascend P6 that we have in India for a while now is 6.2 mm thick. A device this slim is something to look forward to. From the images that we got, the device is simple rectangular in design with the top and bottom edge rounded a bit. Below the 5 inch display sit three capacitive keys for options, home and back. The back features the 13 megapixel camera on top left and the speaker grille near the bottom.
The position of physical keys isn’t very clear from the official photos yet. From the side shot, we judge that the right spine houses the tray for micro SIM card. It looks something similar to the SIM tray that we find on Google Nexus 4. There is a small hole to push using a pin to remove the tray. There is no word on how much Gionee Elife S5.5 will weigh but we are very sure that it won’t be much either.

Gionee Elife S5.5 Display
The display, as we came to know, will be offered with a Full HD AMOLED 5-inch display. The 1920 x 1080 resolution will be mated with a 441 pixels per inch. And AMOLED display means that you will get superb contrast ratio. The colors will be very well saturated and you can be sure that the viewing angles would be great as well. The high pixel density means that it would be crisp and even reading very small text won’t be a trouble.
Gionee Elife S5.5 Hardware
The device is powered by an unspecified octa core processor running at a clock speed of 1.7 GHz. Though we recently saw them launch the mini version of their flagship smartphone, Elife E7, and the E7 mini has got similar processor specifications. We assume that this new device has the same processor and chipset as the Elife E7 mini. It has a Mediatek chipset MT6592 chipset with 1.7 GHz processor. It is world’s first chipset that supports true octa core processors. The maximum achievable clock speed is 2 GHz but apparently they decided not to run the processor at its maximum clock speed as it would cause the device to heat up and it isn’t healthy in a device this slim. This chipset features a quad core graphic processor which supports playback of 4K videos and some new video codecs.
Gionee Elife S5.5 will come with 2 GB of RAM which is more than plenty. The internal storage is 16 GB and there is no micro SD slot to expand the memory. This might trouble some people but we won’t complain as they would have to cut corners to make this device so slim. The camera on the back has a resolution of 13 megapixels and even the front camera has a high resolution of 5 megapixels. You get the usual connectivity options but there is no 4G variant yet. It might come out few months later. The device is powered by a non-removable 2300 mAh Li-Ion battery which is pretty decent considering the size of this device.
Gionee Elife S5.5 Software/ Interface
The phone would come with Amigo 2.0; a custom home brewed operating system based on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. We have seen this interface on various other devices from the manufacturer and it is quite good. The interface looks great and the changes are deeper than just some new shortcuts and a launcher. The customization go across the entire system, from lock screen to settings, they have made changes to every part of the interface. There are multiple screens at the lock screen which allow you to have quick access to your entertainment, camera and other features. The icons look nice and are grouped nicely to make it easy for the user to find apps. The android version is a bit old but we expect that they will update it as soon as they develop their custom version of the latest android operating system.
Gionee Elife S5.5 has been showcased in some markets and they have announced that they will bring it to various other markets around the globe. We are sure that India would be on the list as they are trying to make their presence felt here. The device would be priced around 25-28 K if and when it comes here and for the hardware on offer, it would be a steal. This device is definitely something to look forward to and we will bring you a comprehensive review once we actually get our hands on the device.
